First thoughts: DC Animated films are usually pretty good and this one looks promising. Batman and Harley Quinn teaming up is a fun idea (they also work together in Injustice 2) so it might just work. I’m not a big fan of the voice of Harley but maybe I’ll get used to it. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments!
The Killing Joke is one of the best graphic novels of all time . Turning it into an animated film is a hard task but DC has had some amazing animated features in the past. I had high hopes for it but did the film deliver?
The graphic novel is too short to fill a 70 minutes movie so they added a bunch of stuff to extend the run time. The first 30 minutes are all about the dynamic between Batgirl/Barbara Gordon and Batman. Some of these scenes are good and help establish the relationship between the two but some of them are just weird and unnecessary. After the 30 minute mark you basically get an animated version of the graphic novel.
So yeah the new stuff is a bit hit and miss but the adaptation of the graphic novel is pretty spot on. The animations are great, the voice acting is solid so it’s not a bad movie what so ever. But I can see why some people were disappointed; the first 30 minutes just aren’t up to the level of the graphic novel which is a shame.
Conclusion; Is the Killing Joke a great animated film? Well I wouldn’t call it great but it’s definitely good. It’s a shame that the first part can’t live up to the greatness of the rest (well the greatness of the graphic novel). It’s not the best animated film that DC has ever made (that for me is still Assault on Arkham) but it’s definitely enjoyable.
The Dark Knight Returns ! The Caped Crusader is, once again, the main focus of my pickups. But which Batman related items did I buy this week?
The Dark Knight Returns part 1 and 2 (blu-ray).
DC has been known to deliver top notch animated films and these two are no exception. It’s based on the critically acclaimed comic book written by Frank Miller so you know that it’s good.
Batman v Superman : Gauntlet Assault Batman action figure
I was actually looking for some Funko Pop vinyl figures when I stumbled upon this action figure. I liked the way it looked and it was on sale which made the decision of buying it very easy.
What’s your favorite DC animated film? Let me know in the comments!
When Batman disappears it’s up to Nightwing to take up the role of the Dark Knight. Meanwhile he, Batwoman and Robin try to find out what happened to the ‘real’ Batman.
The story is quite original and there are a few unexpected things that happen along the way to keep it entertaining/interesting. It’s also nice that we get to see a more ‘unstable’ version of Batman instead of the cool and calm Dark Knight that we are used to seeing. The action is solid and will definitely keep you entertained for the duration of the film.
The only thing that bothers me a bit is how casually the heroes act when a villain dies. They joke about it (even Alfred!) and that really doesn’t fit Batman’s ‘we don’t kill anyone’ narrative.
Conclusion: Batman Bad Blood is a very solid DC animated film. The story is interesting and the action is nice to watch. And it was also very cool to see Batwing and The Mad Hatter in an animated film.
